It's time once again for our annual Swim Tests. Mrs. Peirson has graciously agreed to host and run the swim tests again this year. Tests will be conducted at the Shoreview YMCA pool.

If you are on a Swim Team or the SCUBA crew, you do NOT need to restest. Please contact Mr. Blincow and Mrs. Peirson and we will record it as your swim test.

A Note: Mrs. Peirson is strict, fair, and picky about swim tests. This is on purpose. Swim tests allow us to determine aquatics activities and the middle of the lake on a capsized sail boat is not the time to discover that "just a moment of rest" or "just one touch of the bottom" is no longer an option. We want to see you succeed but above all, we want you to be Prepared and be safe.

You can work on your swimming and retake your swim classification at camp if necessary.

All youth and adult participants are designated as swimmers, beginners, or nonswimmers based on swimming ability confirmed by standardized BSA swim classification tests. Each group is assigned a specific swimming area with depths consistent with those abilities. The classification tests must be renewed annually, preferably at the beginning of the season even if the Scout has earned the Swimming merit badge.

Swimmer

Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke.
The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
Rest by floating…Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.
Beginner

Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
Swim 25 feet on the surface.
Stop, turn, and resume swimming back to the starting place.
Non-Swimmer

Did not complete either of the swimming tests.
